How to Host a Montessori-Friendly Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is an opportunity to connect with family members, reflect on everything to be thankful for, and create special memories. At Meadow Montessori, we want to equip parents with tips and techniques to make this Thanksgiving more meaningful and child-friendly! From preparing the feast to giving back to the community, we’ll show you how to host a Montessori-inspired Thanksgiving that promotes hands-on learning, social grace, and generosity.

Preparing the Feast

Let’s start by preparing the feast! You can involve your children in meal planning, recipe selection, setting the table, and so much more. We understand that prepping a Thanksgiving meal can be a stressful time, so why not have the little ones help? This not only builds confidence and independence but it will also help create lifelong memories and traditions.

Child-Friendly Recipes

In terms of child-friendly recipes, it’s essential to focus on dishes that are easy to eat, made with simple ingredients, or are homemade versions of familiar favorites. Consider including sweet potato casserole, mac and cheese, and fruit salad. These will be both appealing and accessible to kids. Additionally, involving children in meal preparation can be a great way to engage them, like participating in rolling out the pie dough. For instance, with a wide array of fruits, they can make a creative fruit platter (they’ll probably also eat some of the delicious and nutritious fruits)!

Set Up a Child-Friendly Serving Area

Encouraging our little ones to participate in setting the table and creating a child-friendly serving area is an excellent opportunity to foster their confidence and independence while enhancing their fine motor skills. When setting the table, consider using serving dishes with easy-to-hold handles, non-breakable plates, and sturdy cutlery that are child-friendly. This way, children can manage everything on their own with ease. By involving them in the process, we’re not only teaching valuable life skills but also instilling a sense of pride and responsibility.

Gratitude, Gratitude, Gratitude!

Thanksgiving offers a chance to express gratitude to your loved ones. While in the Meadow Montessori classroom, children are encouraged to practice gratitude; this holiday is a fantastic opportunity to highlight and promote appreciation in the home!

Mindful Manners

Mindful manners are key to ensuring that everyone feels respected and appreciated, so encourage your children to use words and gestures of gratitude throughout the meal by saying “please” and “thank you.” During Thanksgiving activities, lead a discussion about gratitude and share reasons to be thankful with each other.

Gratitude Activities

Gratitude can be celebrated outside the mealtime as well, with gratitude-themed activities that reinforce the value of being thankful. A nature walk, for example, is an excellent way to cultivate gratitude by showing children the beauty of the world around them. Similarly, a gratitude journal can facilitate time together while creating a written record to reflect on in future years. You could also generate gratitude cards your children can share and give as a Thanksgiving day gift.

Time to Connect

Montessori education values the importance of connecting with others, not only for their fellow students but also with their families! Thanksgiving offers a unique opportunity for quality family time together, creating special memories that all will cherish for years.

Quality Time With the Family

Spending time together as a family provides a nurturing environment that supports a child’s emotional well-being. During Thanksgiving, it’s a perfect opportunity to engage in activities that promote gratitude and thankfulness. Reading stories that highlight these values or playing games centered around gratitude not only strengthens family bonds but also instills essential life lessons. By fostering a sense of togetherness, Montessori education encourages a child’s social and emotional growth, creating a foundation for lifelong learning and compassion.

Giving Back to the Community

Asking your children what they are thankful for can be a great starting point for meaningful conversations about giving back to the community. You could look for ways to donate food baskets or even make Thanksgiving cards for those who may be feeling lonely at the nursing home. Instilling an attitude of generosity early on is a valuable lesson for children and can positively impact their emotional development.
