Make Homemade Cards

Starting with one that is fun for everybody involved! Have your child make their family, loved one’s, or classroom homemade cards. Encourage them to express themselves and get creative. Although these don’t have to be intricate, getting those creative juices flowing and creating something to share is a great way to enforce the theme of giving and love this Valentine’s Day.

Heart Clip Cards

Heart clip cards are an easy and fun way for your children to practice counting. Simply print out a few cards with different numbers of hearts on each one (you can also hand draw these), along with three numbers at the bottom, one being the correct number of hearts drawn. Then, set those cards up with a few clothespins and get your child to place the clothespin over the number on the bottom of the card that corresponds with the number of hearts on the card.

Heart Counting

Like the last activity, this fun game starts with a stack of numbered cards and a few heart beads, stickers, or anything else valentine’s day related. Give your child one numbered card at a time and ask them to use the hearts to count out that number.

Fun With Heart Beads

You can find heart beads at any crafting store or online with relative ease. Use these along with some string to make bracelets for friends and family (or yourselves), and they can always double up as props for other activities such as heart counting and more!

If you are able to get rubber-coated beads, you can also set those up with an empty ice tray and tongs. Once set up, ask your child to take the beads one by one with the tongs and place them into each section of the ice tray. To make this activity a little more challenging, you can use an empty egg carton instead. Draw some dots in the bottom of each well of the ice tray (you can make as many dots as your child can comfortably count). The activity then continues as usual, except instead of one heart per container, have them place the same amount of hearts in each as there are dots.

Valentine’s Day, The Montessori Way

Valentine’s Day presents an excellent opportunity to encourage creativity and emotional intelligence. Through these activities, you can ensure your child is having fun while also learning more about expressing themselves, using their fine motor skills, and spreading their love to family and friends.
